Tupac’s mother sues Death Row records

Tupac ShakurAfeni Shakur who is the mother of murdered rap star Tupac Shakur, is filing for an injunction against Tupac’s former label Death Row Records.

Tupac Shakur’s mother sought the injunction at a federal bankruptcy court in Los Angeles on the 20th July 2007, claiming Death Row Records (which went bust last year) was attempting to sell material that belonged to the rapper’s estate to try and clear its debts.

The family attorney Donald David told E!:

“The estate was under the assumption that it was in possession of all master recordings containing Tupac as a featured artist or side artist, as represented by Death Row. However, upon assessing the debtor’s bankruptcy assets, it was revealed that an album’s worth of unreleased Tupac material was being advertised to potential buyers as the jewel in the crown of the Death Row assets, which is in direct violation of the terms of the 1997 settlement with Death Row.”

Soon after the death of her son, Afeni Shakur sought custody of her Tupac’s tracks that were sitting in the Death Row Record vaults. CEO of Death Row Records Suge Knight real name Marion Knight Jr, did not comply which resulted in Tupac Shakur’s family suing to recover them.  They reached a written agreement in June 1997 which required Death Row to surrender all the master tapes.

However Donald David says that several of the never-before-heard master recordings were listed as part of the Death Row’s assets after it filed for bankruptcy back in April 2006, claiming debts well over $100 million.

Death Row’s fortunes began to dwindle as Suge Knight served more than four years in prison after he was caught on videotape violently beating up a Crips gang member at a Las Vegas casino. Death Row Records never recovered, and failed to regain the status it once had.

A few weeks ago, Suge Knight placed his seven-bedroom, 9½-bath home on the market for $6.2 million as part of a financial overhaul.
