A Special Research Team Into How The Snow Leopard Lives Has Successfully Tagged A Snow Leopard. The Animal Was Caught In A Snare Which The Researchers Set up To Enable THem To Tag A Leopard Of The Local Area.

 

The Intentions Are Tp Try And Work Out Roughly How Much OF An Area The Snow Leopard Needs To Live In Captivity. The Reason BEhind Wanting To Tag Them Is Because THe Snow Leopard is On The ENdangered Animals LIst And could Possibly Face Extinction Due To Herdowners And Other Trades Killing Them.

IT Will Allow Th research Team To View The Animals Life And See If They Approach Roads Or IF They Keep Away From Humans All Together.  The Terrain Where They Live Is ToO Hard For Researchers To .. Well Research Them Without The Aid OF GPS.

 

The Tags WIll Stay In Place For 14 Montha Before Dropping Off Automatically.

 

The Data That Experts Have USed Before For Deciding OIn What The Animal Would Need For Safer Living Is Vast IN Difference. From An Estimate Of 65sqKM to 1000sqKM. With These Kind OF Estimates The Animal May Never Be Happy.

The GPS Unit Sends Data Several Times Day allowing The Experts To Do Their Thing With The Data And Get An Answer.

 

With A Bit Of Luck This Research WIll Help Preserve The Rare Cat.

Snow Leopard Known Facts.Snow Leopards Verging Extinction.

  •  Between 3,500-7,000 snow leopards estimated in wild
  • Live in high, rugged mountains of central Asia
  • Shy, elusive and solitary animals
  • Home-range is unknown
  • In captivity, live up to 21 years
  • Adults weigh between 35-55kg, and stand about 60cm tall
  • Pale dense fur covered in unique dark spots for camouflage
  • Female snow leopards mate every other year
  • Usually 2-3 cubs born in litter

 

The study is a joint collaboration between the Snow Leopard Trust, the Northwest Frontier Province Wildlife Department and WWF-Pakistan.
